Start a Community Edible Landscape!

A Community Edible Landscape, aka “Garden Node”, is a group of neighbors that decide to build an edible landscape together. It can be 3 neighbors, up to an entire block.

The idea is this: Neighbor #1 plants a Pear tree and has a nice sunny backyard for heat-loving crops. Neighbor #2 plants a Plum tree and had an excellent shaded area for Chard, Kale, Spinach, etc Neighbor #3 plants an apple tree and great soil for blueberries. All the neighbors plant what works best in their yards, and then they share the bounties.

The design process is very similar to what we would go through with an individual, justwith a group of people: Who likes to eat what, how much maintenance are the people of the neighborhood (and their children!) willing to do.

  • Good to see the “node” being brought out on the web more. I’ve always thought that we need more people growing their own food, and if you can’t eat your landscape then the only other thing you can do with it is look at it!
I’ve been growing fruit trees for over 30 years and it seems like pulling peoples teeth is easier than trying to get them to plant a fruit tree. Each year it seems to get more awareness of how easy it really is, even in the low deserts here in Arizona.

We are interested in this type of project, also we have an empty lot that is privately owned, which we would LOVE to have the city and or other entity lease from the owner. We think the owner is willing to discuss. What about the idea of housing consultants? Is that something we could still look into?

After reading your article in Organic Gardening, I figured out what I’d like to do when I retire… if the economy lets me… Cultivate Gardeners!!! I’ve been encouraging my neighbors, people at work and church to start gardening… they all have reaped from my sowing… Michael Seliga is my hero! I’ve been doing organic gardening for some years now… I do have an issue with critters that I hope your site can help with. I have to battle ground squirrels constantly, and they actually taken oven one of my flower beds… and I saw a large “mouse” go into my greenhouse… What to do about these rodents… that my wife tells me shouldn’t be concerned with, because God provides for the little critters too! Help…
